A book of ballads. Modern; London, 1856.

Holograph collection of nine primarily sentimental Irish ballads. It begins with reviews of several contemporary collections of ballads, and then attributes the poems in J. J. S.'s own collection to Charles Duffy's Ballad Poetry of Ireland and its companion, The Songs of Ireland by Michael Joseph Barry. The manuscript contains two versions of The Groves of Blarney, one by Richard Millikin and the other "written as a burlesque upon some verses composed by an itinerant poetaster"; Lament of the Irish Emigrant by the Hon. Mrs. Price Blackwood; and The Woman of Three Cows, translated from Irish by James Clarence Mangan; and poems by Gerald Griffin and Thomas Moore. Pasted in at the beginning of each poem is an illuminated letter.

17 leaves ; 26 x 21 cm.
